When the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose is obstructed, snoring takes place.Sometimes kids with large tonsils and adenoids snore. Deformities of the nose, for instance, deviated nasal septum can also cause snoring.

Snoring is not just a social embarrassment but it could well be a cause or symptom of more serious health problems.

• Loosing weight can sometimes cure snoring. Snoring is more common in overweight people.

• Follow a healthy lifestyle to develop good muscle tone and lose weight.

• Avoid sleeping pills, tranquilizers, or antihistamines before sleeping unless prescribed by your doctor.

• Avoid alcohol. Drinking can cause snoring.

• Follow a regular sleeping pattern.

• Try a different sleeping position. Sleep on your side instead of your back. This may help you to stop snoring.

• Quit smoking. Smoking tends to cause nasal congestion which can cause snoring.

• Try sleeping without a pillow; pillows can block your airway by bending your neck. Or

• Elevate your head with pillows or raise the head of your bed by a few inches. This reduces the chances of the throat muscle completely blocking your air passages.

• Improve the quality of air in your home, specially your bedroom. Clear it of possible allergy triggers such as stuffed animals, down pillows and bedspreads, pets, etc.

• Take steam before going to bed. The steam opens up your nasal passages and improves your breathing.

• Do you suffer from sinus? This could be a very likely cause of snoring. Get yourself treated.

• Do not sleep immediately after a heavy meal. Avoid eating within three hours of your bedtime.

• Avoid consuming non-skim milk products and soy milk products can keep mucus from draining properly because of their thickness. This results in mucus being retained in the throat, which can lead to snoring.

• Stay away from antihistamines unless prescribed by your doctor. It relaxes the throat muscles, which can cause snoring.

• Regular playing of the didgeridoo (an Australian wind instrument) is said to improve snoring.
