Home Remedies
Excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp is known as dandruff or scurf. A small amount of flaking is normal, because as skin cells die they flake off. Unfortunately, some people, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an abnormally large amount of flaking. This is often accompanied by redness and irritation.
Dandruff can also be a symptom of dermatitis, psoriasis, or even a fungal infection. Although there are a number of anti-dandruff shampoos on the market, here are some easy, natural remedies that may prevent and/or cure this often embarrassing problem:
• Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in water and ground into a fine paste in the morning. Apply this on the scalp and leave in for ½ hour. Then, wash the hair with soap-nut (reetha) solution or shikakai.
• Add one teaspoon of fresh lime juice to the last rinse when washing your hair. This not only prevents dandruff, it also leaves the hair glowing.
• Wash the hair twice a week with two tablespoons of green gram powder (or besan) mixed with half a cup of curd.
• Beets have been found useful in treating dandruff. Boil tops and roots in water, filter and massage this water into the scalp with the finger tips every night. White beet works better.
• When rubbed into the scalp, the juice of snake gourd has been found beneficial.
• Massaging the hair for 15 minutes with sour curd before washing helps cure dandruff.
• Massage the hair for 15 minutes with a few drops of lime juice mixed with amla juice every night before going to bed. It helps prevent and cure dandruff.
• A mixture of equal parts cider vinegar and water can help when dabbed on the scalp with cotton wool before shampooing. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps cure dandruff.
• Apply aloe vera juice on your scalp, wait 10 minutes, and then wash the hair with a mild shampoo or preferably with reetha, amla and shikakai powder.
• Mix equal quantity of olive oil with almond oil. Apply and leave it on about 5 minutes. Rinse well to clear dandruff.
• Massage your hair with warm coconut oil and then, apply the juice of 2 lemons. Steam your hair and leave the oil on for about 2 hours. Wash with a mild shampoo or preferably with reetha, amla and shikakai powder. Repeat 2-3 times a week.
• Boil a handful of neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. Cool and filter, and use the water for the last rinse after shampooing.
