Health Turmeric: Amazing Ethnic Spice Not Only Tastes Great But is Great For You
By Dan Ho
Health Turmeric
Health turmeric is a perennial native to India, and has a long history of use in India’s Ayurvedic medicine. The roots of the plant are orange in color and can grow up to 2 feet in length.
A compound called curcumin is a potent extract of the root, and has been attributed a wide range of therapeutic benefits.
Health Turmeric: How can it benefit you? Turmeric Pain Relief
Health Turmeric..Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing free radical damage, and acts as an anti-inflammatory, which may help mitigate arthritis (and other) pains. Many people, in fact, swear by turmeric pain relief.
Health turmeric also harbors anti-carcinogenic properties. For example, curcumin slowed the development of prostate cancer on tumor cells in a lab dish and another study at a major University revealed that "a mixture of curcumin and isoflavonoids is the most potent inhibitor against the growth of human breast tumor cells."
A Clinical study at UCLA revealed that curcumin from tumeric may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. Specifically, it reduced the buildup of amyloid protein "plaques" in the brain of rats. Amyloid protein plaque buildup is one of the primary factors that characterizes Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that cultures such as India which use a lot of curcumin in their cooking have a much lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease than the Western world.
Other benefits of health turmeric are: potentially protecting the liver from toxic substances, and reducing platelets from clumping together—which may help guard against atherosclerosis and help improve blood circulation.
Side Effects of Turmeric
Health turmeric seems to be a very safe herb, and is used in powder form in large amounts in Indian cooking. Because it is not considered an essential nutrient, there is no RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance).
Some possible (not exhaustive) side effects of turmeric include: high doses of curcumin on an empty stomach may possibly cause stomach ulcers, nausea, diahrrea. We’d generally recommend taking a daily dosage under 900 mg unless taking health turmeric (curcumin) for a specific ailment.
Tips On Supplement Choice
Potency can vary enormously from one turmeric supplement to another. The highest potency supplements use Health Turmeric extract that is standardized to 95% curcumin or greater.
Health Turmeric (Curcumin) is poorly absorbed and utilized by the body unless taken with piperine, which has been shown to dramatically enhance its assimiliation. Piperine is derived from black pepper, and has been shown to help the body absorb many other nutrients as well.
