Focus on fight against diabetes

There is a new epidemic facing people around the world. It’s not heart disease, cancer, or AIDS: it’s Diabetes. The rise of fast food, environmental pollution, and sedentary lifestyles, has contributed to the alarming growth of diabetes, both globally and in Canada. According to Health Canada, diabetes affects approximately 2 million Canadians, and more than 180 million people worldwide.

With the approach of National Diabetes Awareness Month in November, and World Diabetes Day on November 14th, Minister of Health Tony Clement has called upon Canadians to "focus on diabetes.” Diabetes has become a grave national concern.

Economic burden

Diabetes not only affects the health of the individuals it afflicts, it also has a profound affect on the Canadian economy.

It is estimated that Canada spends approximately $9 billion every year on diabetes. These costs range from efforts to create awareness, to the development and purchase of medication. In 1999, the Government of Canada allocated $115 million to the Canadian Diabetes Strategy (CDS). These funds were specifically designated for use in response to this growing health concern, to step up efforts to prevent Type 2 diabetes, and to address complications associated with the disease. In addition, between 2006 and 2007, the Canadian government invested $32.8 million in diabetes research through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Now is the time to act!

We are not without recourse in the diabetes crisis, but in order to enjoy a healthy future, both physically and fiscally, Canadians must take action now. Approximately 90 per cent of diabetes cases in Canada are of Type 2 diabetes, which is generally preventable, and in many cases, even curable.

The gravity of the situation calls for immediate action on the part of the individual, whether or not you currently suffer from the disease or feel you are at risk. A balanced diet, healthy lifestyle, and regular exercise are the key factors in managing, preventing and possibly curing diabetes.

Being informed and aware of the risk factors, causes, symptoms, and means of prevention is often the best way keep diabetes at bay.
